The 400th anniversary commeration of the granting of the city charter to Kilkenny in 1609 created the oppertunity to publish this volume, which it is hoped will be a lasting memorial of the occasion. The purpose has been to produce a series of chapters that provide a general, even at times interupted, narrative overview of the history of Kilkenny, which is aimed primarily at the people of the city. This is not to say that the book is not relevant to scholars.
