Waterford is Ireland's oldest City and the oldest named area in the City is Ballybricken, in the Irish language Baile na Bric, the town of the O Brics. Question-who were the O Brics? They were one of three families that made up the Deice tribe who settled in what is now Co.Waterford ant thiewr area stretched from Creden Head in the East to Ardmore in the West. The other two families that made up this tribe were named O Faolain, in English this translated to Phelan and Whelan. Their memory is perpetuated in the townland of Rathwhelan, the fort of the O Faolain and is situated between Dunmore and Tramore. The third family of this tribe is the O Eachthigheirn. This family have not left their home on any area, the English of this name is Herne or Aherne. The entire tribe is remembered by the named townland of Ballinaneeshagh, Baile na Deice. This tribe arrived here as Jesus Christ walked the earth, so the name Ballybricken is the oldest named part of the City. It is therefore fitting that this album should begin with Ballybricken and its colourful fair, now but a memory. Jack O Neill, a retired train driver, was born in Waterford City in 1928. He has published several books, as well as numerous articles, of historical and railway interest.
